For a very long time, automotive security has remained fairly unchanged, many vehicles still have very minimal security, offering no challenge to today's car theives. Some car manufacturers have tried various methods of deterring theives including internal door barriers, unusual keyholes and electronic entry. These methods all have varying levels of success. Today, manufacturers are striving for increased market share by improving the security measures in their products. The inconvenience of having your car stolen (not to mention increased insurance premiums and excesses) and pressure from insurance companies have forced manufacturers to reassess security.

Since 1995, vehicles begun being manufactured with electronic immobiliser systems installed, taking car security to the 21st century. The keys for these vehicles come with an electronic chip inside the head which hold an electronic password giving the car a signal for permission to start the engine when the key is turned. Immobilisers combined with improved sophistication of the door locking systems make cars a difficult target, but the technology comes at a high price. Vehicles with these security systems normally come with two to four keys. Over time, keys can get lost and cars get sold. The price of a replacement key with immobiliser is substantially higher than an old style key. One manufacturer advised the cost of a new key is approximately $3000. Preventing these situations from happening is the answer.

You should always keep a spare key somewhere in case you lose it. It is also worthwhile to record the key number ("password") for your immobiliser and keep it in a handy place just incase.
